Hope you had a great Christmas!!!!

We did.....had a wonderful Christmas Eve dinner with my best boys......

My Dad, a WWII vet, my bro Mike and my son Ian...

The dogs got to have some fun too....we had so much ham left over that they are getting a little bit for dinner with their dog food every night.....they are super happy!!!! Wanted to show a pic of my tree too......since I retired money for Christmas has been pretty tight.....but I love looking at my tree all season!!!!
But now on to other things. I have to give some props to my Louisiana friends in this post. We had a dog that one of our new friends to the rescue, Amy, picked up on the 17th. Someone had let him loose on the streets of Houston.....she found him and rescued him. He had mange, was heartworm positive and underweight for his size. She couldn't keep him.....so I put out a note on facebook and within minutes I got a call from my good friend Velvet in Louisiana.......she decided to take him the weekend before Christmas and take care of him. All is going well he is being treated for mange and heartworm and doing great in his new home.
This is Nico, glad to have a new home for the holidays!
I also have to send a big thank you to my friends Greg and Stephanie, also in Louisiana. I posted about Maya a few months ago, she had been taken to a high kill shelter, her chances were not good....but once again this family stepped up and ran to rescue her! She had been shaved and looked pretty bad.

Maya then
But check out how she looks today!!!
A little love and care can do wonders!!!
So thanks Amy, Velvet, Greg and Stephanie.....you have done a terrific job!!!
If you have a chance, please check Husky Haven's facebook page. There are a ton of beautiful Huskies that are going to be put down in the next few days, maybe some of you can make sure they have a Happy New Year.
Have a wonderful evening...

This is Ciella.....she is blind in her left eye.....but not a problem for her!!! She is sweet as she can be, will be looking for her new home sometime after the first of the year!!!
Here is Snowboy....an absolutely stunning all white boy.....he just wants hugs and petting....you'll get a lot of kisses from him!!!

A great weekend!!!!!

So we really had a wonderful weekend. We had our Husky Haven Christmas Party......Saturday night.....and check out the generous donations for our babies!!!
A ton of treats!!!!!

We got so many treats and tons of bags of food......thanks to all our wonderful volunteers.....you really gave our kids a great Christmas.
So even better news Sunday!!! We had gotten a call from a family in Dallas/Fort Worth area.....they wanted to drive down and check out some of our babies. And they were very specific.....they were older and they wanted a couple of older dogs.....we all know older dogs are harder to place. They had thought about Thelka and Marta......but Marta needs to be on her own.....she's not great with other dogs. So we were thinking maybe Thelka and one of our older boys. The first dogs they saw when they came in were Sheena and Chrishell.......two females that were picked up together....we figure a mom and daughter.....about 5 and 7 years old. They looked at the other dogs , but you could tell that the woman was quite taken with the two girls!!!
Chrishell

Sheena
After some paperwork...the girls were loaded into the backseat with their new Mom and off to their forever home......so happy for them and that they could have their life together!!!!! Have a wonderful time my sweet girls!!!
So to complete the weekend....we got another adoption. Our friend, Meredith, had adopted Nelly earlier in the year and came by with her dogs just to see Iceman. Iceman had been hard to place, he has storm fear, so he needs someone to work with him. It all worked out and he was on the way to his forever home too!!!!

So happy for him and I know he has gone to a great home!!!!
Some bread I made for the party.....had to throw that in.
So a great weekend......love all of our HH volunteers.....you are the best.....you keep us going!!!!!Thanks!!!!
More news soon!!!!!

Miss Zena....

So I  figured I would  talk about Miss Zena......in 2008 I had many dogs as fosters....they stayed and were soon adopted but Zena was a 12 year old girl that ended up at animal control......I think because she was either too old or her family was moving and didn't want to take her along. And that's all I will say about that!!  I only had Lizzy at the time and my last foster had been adopted.....it was November and I decided to help this girl. She was very laid back....perfect for my alpha girl. We spent a very happy Thanksgiving and Christmas together , and I figured because of her age that I would keep her......
We are just playing Mom!!!!

Really we are!!!

Ok enough of that!!!
In March of 2009 I got a call from our director......someone was looking for a dog her age.I was a little shocked....but if she had a chance for a forever home I had to give her that. The couple that came to see her had just lost their 13 year old girl and had a 14 year old Husky boy they wanted a companion for. She turned out to be a perfect match and she went to her new home that day!!! They sent me updates every few weeks and all seemed to be going well.......until three months in. She had stopped eating and they asked what they should do....I just suggested changing food and trying different treats.....Zena never had a problem with food at my house. A couple of days went by and they took her to the vet.....she had a huge tumor in her stomach. The vet wanted to put her down then to make sure she had no more pain......but they took her home and decided what to do. After another day of her being in pain and suffering they had her put to sleep. They felt so terrible about it they had her autopsied.....she would have died a day or two later.....it was a fast moving tumor......probably she only had it for a month. I felt terrible for them....she had been so vibrant when I had her......but it was nothing we could have predicted or changed. The worst part of this story is that a month after Zena died their other Husky died in his sleep. I asked them a few months later if they could foster for us while our director was having surgery......but they said it was too hard. I can't imagine losing three dogs in such a short period of time....it hasn't happened to me.....but I understood. So this is for Zena....at least she got a few months in a great home.
Hope you're having fun at the Rainbow Bridge, sweet girl!!!

I'm going to post more often......I swear!!! It actually was hard for me to write this story........she was a great girl.
So, tomorrow some unexpected adoptions!!!!
Later.........

My baby Ash.......

I was going to try and post more often this month.......I've ended up posting less. A year ago my sweet kitty Ash died. I had Ash for about seven years and I miss him cuddling up with me every night. Don't really know how old he was.....he lived with my son's friends for many years. They were moving and asked me if I could take him, said only if he was declawed........of course he was!!!! He got the run of the house for about 3 years until I started getting dogs. Then we just divided the house into two parts and he got the run of the back. I swear he would have beat the crap out of the dogs if they ever got to him. One night last December I noticed he was acting kind of strange, sleeping in different places and general restlessness. I told him to relax and I would get him to the vet in the morning........five minutes later he howled and fell to the floor. I ran and scooped him up, he took his last few breaths laying in my arms with me telling him it was alright.....I knew he had to leave me......I'll never have a more wonderful cat than Ashter.....he's always in my heart.

I didn't have any really great pics of Ash......this was one his Dad before me took....and one of the best pics ever.....you always needed to hold your book or mag up high, or he'd be in the middle of it. And forget wrapping presents in his presence.......Christmas was his favorite time!!!!
He still sits right by me everyday.......miss you sweet boy........

So...ten months ago.....

I wanted to post earlier in the week....but was waiting for some pics to come in. Those never materialized so I'm going to go with what I've got. If you have been reading my blog for a while, you know about our puppies, if not, here's a very brief story. January 26th Husky Haven was called to animal control to look at a Husky. She was in isolation when we arrived, having puppies. Since she was an owner turn in that day, Mom and all six puppies would have been euthanized that night. We rescued all seven of them .....now all of them have great homes, including Mom. I was hoping to have a current picture from all six homes where our puppies are now, but we'll have to settle for four.
Billy at four to six weeks.

Billy now!!!!

Willy at four to six weeks.

Willy now!!!
Silly then!!

Silly now!!!
Tilly then!!!!

Nanook now!!!!
Our babies are all grown up!!!! I really enjoyed the few months I got to play with them everyday....they sure were a lot of fun!!!!!
I'm showing a couple of pics of the jewelry I am making for Christmas....this will be on my Etsy tomorrow. All my bracelets are twenty dollars and earrings are ten. I use sterling silver, pewter and crystals and lampwork beads. I give 25% back to the rescue.....if you like them, please purchase one for you or a loved one.......trying to make as much money as I can for rescue this Christmas.

One more thing today.....I need to post a baby from the other rescue I spend a lot of time with Best Friends FurEver. We have some dogs up at a kennel, they have a lot of dogs there.I figure since I'm there anyway I might as well play with them , too!!!! So today's dog is Spencer. He's a wonderful Pit, so fun and loving.....he would really like to come home with you!!!!!

Come on.....look at that face!!! He's about two and up to date on all shots. I always encourage everyone to adopt from Husky Haven , but maybe you want a different breed of dog. Please consider Best Friends FurEver if you do.
Hoped you enjoyed puppy pics.......have a wonderful day!!!!!

Laz.......

So we got a note and pictures of our boy, Laz, in his new home. I'm just going to post his note.....he is a happy boy!!!!

Dear Miss Pat, Beth , and all my friends at Husky Haven,
Thank you so much for rescuing me , nursing me back to health, and finding me a good family to adopt me. They like to pet me and take me for walks. It is my job to give lots of kisses and chase the squirrels in the backyard.I don't talk much, but when I do my family gets really happy. I enjoy beds, though I don't think they are for sleeping. Instead , I use them to roll around and play in. I have only peed on the Christmas tree once!!! My favorite room in the house is the kitchen. I spend hours in there helping my mommy cook. Such magical smells come from that room. But the best part about the whole house is the backyard, where we have a pool!!! Oh how I love to go up and down the pool steps several times a day!!! As you can see from the pictures, I am so very happy to be a part of my new family.
     Love, Lazarus

As you can see, Laz has found a wonderful home.......we still have plenty of babies that need their forever home too......if you can help please go to Husky Haven and check it out. Have a wonderful weekend!!!!!!

Some new adoptions.........and a big thanks!!!!!

I need to say thank you to all of you that posted on my blog and on FB........I appreciate all you had to say....I make such a small contribution to rescue......I am grateful to all of you. That was a hard post for me to write....I had never written it down before.....but I think it was a good thing to do.....

OK.....now on to the fun stuff for the weekend. First...I have to show a picture of Shara.....she was our little girl that was being fostered by our friend, Heather......

Looks comfy , doesn't she???? So Heather had her for a few weeks and she got adopted through Pet Fest. Then Heather took our beautiful boy Tilton.......and she got him adopted.....
Tilton with Heather's Husky Haven adopted baby, Tamara

Tilton having a wonderful evening!!!!
So now, Heather has taken Adam as her foster and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.........
Adam's first evening!!!!!

So I think that we are going to give all our dogs to Heather and our friend Val.........sorry girls, you're just doing too well getting the kids adopted!!!!!
One final adoption from Sunday.....our sweet boy Laz!! I have featured Laz in both my Bridgeland post and also my post when I was presenting at the high school.....he's a big, bouncy boy and so much fun!! He found himself a great family, they had just lost their Husky baby and just couldn't imagine being without someone to greet them at night......
He wasn't the one they originally came to see......but was the one who won their hearts. My  lovely Julia was sad over this , she loved Laz......but look how happy he is!!!!!!!
So now for the comic relief pic of the night.......last night I told the dogs to go to bed, yes I sleep on a couch.....long story......and this is what I walked into........
I guess I get to sleep on the floor.......thanks guys!!!!!!!!!
Have a fantastic evening!!!!!!

My Story........

No dogs today....there will be plenty of new stories from this weekend......this story is about how my life was profoundly changed on this date 16 years ago.
I was coming home from work....it was a Monday , and stopped at the grocery store to get some dinner for my son before my boyfriend at the time and I went to our favorite sports bar to watch a Green Bay/Dallas game (I'm not a Dallas fan even though I live in Texas). Picked up the groceries and started home. There was a ton of construction near the store and traffic was at a standstill......so people waved me through four lanes....I had almost made it when a car coming out of nowhere hit me in the back....I went sideways and was t-boned by a truck going at least thirty miles over the speed limit. You can probably imagine how that went. I know and I was ready then.....I was dead. I'm not a religious person, but I had what is referred to as an out of body experience.....all I can say is it was really peaceful. But as I was leaving....someone said my son's name.....then I knew I had to change my course. I opened my eyes and was already covered with a sheet.....I coughed and screamed. The paramedics uncovered me and asked me who I was, where I lived......and told me I had been clinically dead......not breathing....no pulse. Of course I was taken to the nearest hospital......where I laid there for over an hour , bleeding, until someone wheeled me into a room. They took off the backboard and neck brace the paramedics had put me in and had me walk to a bed. I couldn't take my hands away from my neck, I knew something bad had happened to me but no one would listen. The doc was busy flirting with the girl in the next room and completely ignored me. My boyfriend came to the hospital and asked why I wasn't being looked at.....the doc said I  had sprained my neck and should probably be quiet.....they would bring me some aspirin. They asked me to walk to X-ray....but I couldn't do it.....so he decided to give me a CAT scan to shut me up. I got there and the tech started the machine......one minute later all he said was "Shit , don't move". A couple of minutes later the paramedics were back......strapping me back onto the backboard and neck brace. We were off to the medical center in downtown Houston. While I getting my head stitched back together, yes, I had sliced my head in the back from one end to the other.........my doc for the next many months told me that C1 through C4 vertebrae had been destroyed. He actually wondered why I was alive , and since I was why was I not paralyzed. That night changed everything about me........I was put into a Halo........check out this medieval device....and would remain with that for the next seven months. I came home a week later and spent all that time laying in a hospital bed in the middle of my living room. Since you can't drive, can't move that much and can't move your head at all........I had a ton of time to contemplate my life. I was always all about me.......why didn't things happen that I wanted to when I wanted to.....I was unhappy , not comforting or caring. Something in me changed........after I got out of my Halo......many months later.....I realized my life had to change. I started doing volunteer work.....something I had never done.....but something was missing. It took me many years to get to rescue.......but I found that was the one thing that made me whole.....there was a reason that I was saved that day 16 years ago. That's my story............

Liesha.....

Thought I'd do a short post on one of our newer girls...Liesha. She is a really pretty.....well, almost white with some gray thrown in. Once again, found on the streets.....with a terrible case of mange. We have had her for a little over a month.......been giving her mange baths as often as we can......she is looking better. But I'm going to show the pics from when she first came in......never understand how people can let a dog come to this!!!!

Mange will manifest itself when the dog has a compromised immune system......improper food and water, or none at all.....being left outside, in weather changes with no shelter. I hate that most of the dogs we get come in with a ton of problems......but feel fortunate that we are there to help. I will have some updated pics of her soon. She is listed on the Husky Haven website and you can see how far she's come!!!!
In other news, BLD aka Trooper is doing really well. He is finally using his leg, and although he still has more work, he's getting there!!!
I had to include this next picture. I have been pet sitting for a friend of mine......having a lot of fun with her dogs.......but here's what it looks like every time I leave Dos and Hailey.........
I know they are trying to guilt me into coming back in......sweet babies.......
Have a great evening..........
